Woodchip hopper: from rough layout to manufacturing detail
A small industrial equipment package within a wider plant layout called for a woodchip hopper, support frame and access features. Frugal developed the client’s rough arrangement into a lighter, rationalised design for manufacture, including connection verification, 3D CAD and fabrication drawings.

Situation
A hopper package had already been roughed out in 3D within a wider plant layout to establish its space claim, general arrangement and principal interfaces. Frugal was commissioned to develop that early arrangement into a resolved package for manufacture, assembly and integration on a tight programme.
The work covered the hopper, support frame, work platform, fixed access ladder, handrailing and related safety features, all within an already-defined plant envelope.
The real problem
The task was to turn the initial arrangement into a cleaner, lighter and more buildable design without disrupting the established plant layout or underlying structural basis.
The package also needed resolved connections, practical assembly logic and sufficient manufacturing detail to avoid carrying unnecessary weight, part variety and fabrication complexity into production.
Constraints
Fixed envelope, levels and interfaces: The package had to fit the established plant arrangement and suit fixed conveyor positions and angles.
Defined structural basis: Primary steel sizes and spans had been established and verified by the structural engineer. Frugal’s design and connection detailing had to work within that basis.
Coordinated structural changes: Any proposed changes to the primary arrangement required engineering assessment before being returned to the structural engineer for re-verification.
Bolt-together assembly: The package was intended to be fabricated and erected as a straightforward kit of parts, with minimal reliance on site welding or adjustment.
Fabricator-led detailing: The design needed to suit the selected manufacturer’s capabilities while controlling fabrication effort, material use and part variety.
Vibrator integration: Space and interfaces had to be reserved for a side-mounted vibrator before the final unit had been selected.

Outcome

Rationalisation reduced the structural steel weight by around 20%. The package was manufactured and installed successfully, with no major drawing revisions, no technical queries and no production or installation issues arising from the design.
What this enabled
The client was able to delegate the complete hopper-detailing package and remain focused on wider plant coordination and programme delivery.
The resolved assembly, structural interfaces and manufacturing information gave the fabricator a clear basis for manufacture and erection.
