It suits a recurring stream of focused tasks such as technical queries, option development and comparison, calculations, sketches, mark-ups, supplier responses, interface questions, and smaller pieces of design development.

The response is proportionate to the request. It may be a recommendation, calculation, a 3D modelled proposed detail, marked-up document, concise technical note, or other practical engineering output rather than a complete design package.

Where a request develops into a substantial or self-contained piece of work, it is usually clearer to define that separately as a Defined-scope sprint.

This service places me in an active engineering role, developing advice and undertaking smaller pieces of work as part of your wider project.

Independent checking is a separate service focused on critically reviewing designs, calculations, drawings, or proposals produced by others. Although this retainer may include reviewing information as part of developing an answer, its primary purpose is to produce the engineering input or work required.

Not usually. It works best once enough project context and a usable working basis have been established for individual requests to be understood and addressed efficiently.

That context may come from earlier work I have undertaken, or from a client whose requirements, design information, team, and responsibilities are already sufficiently well defined.
